About Us
Boys & Girls Village, Inc. was founded as the original "Boys Village" in 1942 by New Haven County High Sheriff J. Edward Slavin and Daniel J. Adley, a principal in a major Northeast trucking firm based in New Haven.
Founded as a "work farm for first-offenders," the agency has served a coed population of boys and girls since the mid-1980s and we changed our name to "Boys & Girls Village" in June 2002.
Today, Boys & Girls Village is a federal IRS approved 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit agency licensed by the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF) for our residential and therapeutic treatment components, and by the Connecticut Department of Education for our Day School for children with special educational needs. Referrals are received from DCF, managed care companies and from public school systems.
The clients of Boys & Girls Village are children in crisis or children with learning difficulties who have experienced rejection, failure or abuse. Through the years, the agency has evolved into a leading therapeutic and learning facility offering residential shelter, clinical, after-school, counseling, special educational, foster & adoptive programs, family support services, and day programs for children and their families.
The agency is funded by DCF and other state sources, insurers under managed care contracts, local communities and school systems, and by voluntary contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations.
Boys & Girls Village serves children and families throughout Connecticut from our main campus in Milford, Connecticut, and through community offices located in Bridgeport and Waterbury.

Chester Brodnicki Appointed Interim CEO
MILFORD, CT (Dec. 1, 2008) – The board of Boys & Girls Village of Milford has appointed Chester J. Brodnicki of West Hartford as its Interim CEO, effective Dec. 1.
“We needed to take a fresh look at how we run our organization, how it serves Connecticut’s at-risk children and families, and how we can maintain a solid level of growth in the future,” said Anthony V. Avallone, board chairman.
Brodnicki, 65, has more than 35 years experience in child mental health services administration. He formerly was interim executive director of Family Life Education, Inc., in Hartford, and executive director of the Clifford W. Beers Guidance Clinic, Inc., New Haven. He currently chairs the Child Mental Health Task Force for the Connecticut chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).
As Interim CEO of Boys & Girls Village, Brodnicki will oversee the organization’s program assessment and planning, staffing, and fund raising and development initiatives, while the search begins for a full-time CEO.
“Chet impressed us with his strong social work background and extensive experience in mental health and we look forward to the role he’ll play in the future,” said Avallone.
Brodnicki, who volunteers his fund raising expertise to the United Way of Greater New Haven, and tutors four first grade students in the Hartford Public School system, has written numerous professional papers on the subject of family mental health. He graduated from Wagner College with a B.A. degree in Sociology and holds a Master of Social Work degree from the School of Social Welfare at SUNY Buffalo. A former competitive marathoner and currently a church soloist at Grace Lutheran Church in Hartford, he is married, has three adult daughters and eight grandchildren, and resides in West Hartford.
