MILFORD – When Milford resident and businesswoman Diana Nytko glanced at the Boys & Girls Village Day School art work on the silent auction table at the Annual Awards Dinner in January 2008, one piece caught her eye.
Upon closer inspection, Nytko definitely saw something – it was “potential.”
Nytko is a member of the Boys & Girls Village Advisory Board and a real estate appraiser by trade, so she knows a thing or two about “value.” So, she penciled in a modest bid for the student art piece – and lo and behold when the Boys & Girls Village Annual Awards Dinner silent auction was closed, Nytko was the proud new owner of the pen-and-ink masterpiece. “That young man has talent,” Nytko said afterward. “If he sticks with it, perhaps gets some training, he could take that talent somewhere.” She was referring to Boys & Girls Village Day School student, Jaime, 12.
So Nytko gathered up some valued art supplies of her own, included several how-to-draw and paint instructional books, and threw in some new brushes and related items. She presented the package to the somewhat surprised and usually rambunctious young man, who suddenly fell quiet at an informal meeting about a month after the awards dinner, a meeting also attended by a member of the Day School staff. Jaime didn’t have much else to say, except a polite, “Thank you,” perhaps surprised by all the attention. However, he was clearly pleased with his new possessions and promised Nytko that he would seriously consider further art studies.
