These services range from highly structured sub-acute services on campus to intensive intervention and care in the home and the community. PURPOSE/FUNCTION OF PROGRAM:

 

(The Helping Adolescent Males in Learning Their Options Now) HAMILTON program is a 6 bed alternative to detention program for males ages 14 to 18 years of age.  The purpose of this 14 day program is to provide a comprehensive assessment of needs and link youth and their families to community-based services and natural supports that will best meet their needs.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

 

The Youth Mentor acts as a role model for and reinforces the youth’s individual needs plan. They drive youth to court, appointments and recreational trips. They are responsible for directly supervising and engaging with youth and assisting them in developing adaptive living skills. The Youth Mentor also actively supervises, monitors, and manages crisis situations. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Provide a safe, orderly and nurturing living experience for program youth by providing direct care, supervision, behavioral management, recreational and therapeutic programming
  2. Assist clients with daily living skills as well as teach clients so that they can learn new skills.
  3. Ensure that goals/objectives of each youth’s individual and crisis management plan are implemented as part of the daily activities.
  4. Complete documentation as per requirements.
  5. Ensure that any issues or client behaviors that are observed are discussed with Managers. 
  6. Immediately notify Manager and/or Director regarding crisis situations, including elopements, major aggression and sexual acting out. Immediately report to supervisor anytime emergency personnel are called.
  7. Fully implement all program policies and procedures.
  8. Provide crisis intervention utilizing individual, group and peer principles. If necessary perform emergency safety interventions (restraints) safely and effectively.
  9. May be mandated to stay beyond the end of shift if coverage is required.
  10. Adhere to the staffing schedule with the understanding that shift assignments are determined by program needs.
  11. Responsible for transporting clients to and from court, appointments, and recreational activities.
  12. Ensure that the milieu is “home like” and participate in household daily activities with youth such as cooking meals.
  13. If Med certified, administer medication, as scheduled by nurse and prescribed by psychiatrist.
  1. Complete all trainings, in house and external by due date.
  2. Accepts additional assignments and responsibilities as requested by supervisors.

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

 

  1. Associate Degree or the equivalent. 
  2. Ability to deal with crisis situations; implement behavior modification programs; maintain appropriate boundaries; and work as a team member.
  3. Must display effective communication skills in working with children, families, and other staff
  4. Must fulfill competency based training requirements in TCI and Social Skills Model
  5. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  6. As essential staff, you must be able to work outside normal business hours, if needed (ie. evenings, weekends and holidays). This role is considered and classified as “essential” to the operations of the Agency

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Bi-lingual
  2. Certified in CPR and First Aid
  3. Knowledge of cultural diversity and childhood development
  4. Experience working in congregate care settings or with juvenile justice youth.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. N/A

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

  1. Ability to perform TCI consistent with program policy and procedure
  2. Ability to climb stairs

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:

 

  1. Some travel may be required to take clients to appointments and school.
  2. Must be able to maintain a flexible schedule in order to meet program needs
