Steven M. Kant, M.D. Appointed As President and CEO of Boys & Girls Village
Milford, CT (February 8, 2013) – The Board of Directors of Boys & Girls Village has named Steven M. Kant, M.D. as the agency’s President and Chief Executive Officer. Boys & Girls Village, founded in 1942, has consistently been one of Connecticut’s leading community providers for children and their families for 70 years. With headquarters in Milford and offices in Bridgeport and Waterbury they provide a wide range of family-centered services for children and adolescents struggling with emotional, behavioral and psychiatric difficulties. Last year they provided professional behavior and psychiatric care for over 1,200 children and adolescents. BGV serves clients from 50 different communities throughout Connecticut. Services and programs include an alternative to inpatient hospital, residential treatment and a special education K through 8th grade programs at all of our locations. Many of Boys & Girls Village’s services focus on those youth with histories of trauma, abuse or who present with complex behavioral health needs. Boys & Girls Village is a private, non-profit community provider. Funding for the agency is provided through various grants, Medicaid, insurance, school districts and community donations. Dr. Kant, a local resident from Easton, CT has been a leader within BGV for over two decades, having served as Chief Medical Officer for the past 15 years. Most recently, Dr. Kant served as Acting CEO in concert with his duties as Chief Medical Officer. During his tenure, Dr. Kant led the agency and greatly expanded their treatment services as well as advancing the agency’s more traditional social child welfare and educational programs. He was instrumental in the development and implementation of an alternative to inpatient treatment for children – a 16 bed Kids I.N.N., opened in 1999 and more recently a new specialized residential program cited by the Commissioner of the state’s Department of Children and Families for its important contribution to the changing mental health needs in the state.
The breadth of Dr. Kant’s experience and knowledge in the child and adolescent psychiatry field is extensive. Spanning 33 years, he has worked with a wide spectrum of psychiatric facilities throughout Connecticut and Michigan. He received his B.A. in Biology from City University in New York, received his medical degree from Upstate Medical College in Syracuse, New York and went on to complete his residency in Psychiatry and Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Kant has also been instrumental in advocating for the behavioral health services for many of Connecticut’s most vulnerable youth. He played a key role in the reshaping of care provided to youth in the state’s Medicaid program in his role as the Chief Medical Director for the CT Behavioral Health Partnership – a partnership between the departments of Children and Families and Social Services.
As President and CEO, Dr. Kant’s responsibilities will include overseeing the continued growth and expansion of services provided by Boys & Girls Village, and their transformation to becoming a state-wide resource as well as a regional provider for youth at-risk and in need of intensive behavioral health services. In that capacity Dr. Kant will be overseeing over 150 employees and an annual budget of approximately 15 million dollars.
Carol Smith Harker, Chair of the Board of Directors, in announcing Dr. Kant’s appointment noted that he will join the seasoned leadership team in place at Boys & Girls Village and that the agency remains committed to providing the highest quality of comprehensive behavioral care for Connecticut’s children and families.
