Milford Student Billy Panzella Will Be First Eagle Scout In His Family

Milford resident Billy Panzella, 15, is a sophomore at Joseph A. Foran High School. A Scout for nine years, he is currently under the guidance of Troop 1 Scoutmaster, Mark Krom. This holiday, Billy decided to develop and coordinate a special collection drive to benefit the local non-profit organization Boys & Girls Village (BGV). This project will support earning an Eagle Scout designation – a first in Billy’s family.

Billy shared his reason for choosing Boys & Girls Village, Inc. as a beneficiary, “I believe BGV is a great organization that does wonderful things to help less fortunate children and families and give these kids a chance to be better and more productive citizens in their communities.”

Among the businesses hosting this special holiday collection drive are: Mr. Kold Kuts and Orange Ale House, both on Boston Post Road in Orange; The Milford Bank branches, Wines and More West, Anthony D’s Bar, Stonebridge Restaurant, Off the Hook Restaurant, all in Milford. Those wishing to donate can drop off a new unwrapped toy until December 12th. Small donation cans have also been set up at various businesses around the City to collect monetary donations.

When asked what it means to him personally to achieve Eagle Scout rank, Billy shared, “When someone reaches the rank of Eagle Scout it says something about them as a person. It shows what you are capable of doing, if you are determined and put your mind to something. It helps to teach you to be a responsible, productive member of the community.”

Project Details

Billy describes the project: “I decided to do this project because I wanted to do a service project for the Boys & Girls Village. I approached Mr. Joseph Tramuta, Co-Chair of their Board of Directors with this idea, and he paved the way for me to move forward. I have set up donation boxes in various locations aroundMilford and Orange. Once collected, my plan is to deliver the toys to BGV, and assist with wrapping and distributing the presents to the children. I am getting the word out to friends and family to get passed on for many to hear. I have placed posters with the boxes at the drop off locations to announce the toy drive. I was very pleased when The Milford Bank agreed to let me place boxes at their branches since they are so spread out throughout the city that it will be convenient for anyone in Milford to get to their nearest branch.”

According to the BSA’s website, Eagle Scout is the highest advancement rank in Boy Scouting. To earn the rank a Boy Scout must, progress through all other ranks in proper order, earn 21 merit badges, serve 6 months in a troop leadership position, take part in a Scoutmaster conference, plan and develop a service project and successfully complete an Eagle Scout board of review.
